Quite a lay person definition of fact.
"Fish evolved into land animals millions of years ago" is a fact because there is so much evidence in favor of that, that it would be perverse not to call it a fact.
Same thing as the WTC really, probably to different degrees of easiness of assessment.

Yes, according to one (philosophical) definition, facts are truths, i.e. true propositions, such that the phrase "false fact", meaning "false true proposition", certainly is a contradiction in terms. But even according to that definition, "fact" doesn't mean "proposition known to be true". Even though "p is known to be true" implies "p is true", "p is true" doesn't imply "p is known to be true":
