Richard Dawkins interviewing Derren Brown uncut? Two of my favourite people in the world! Brilliant!

Yes, this is the one I have been waiting for. Would rather be able to pay to download it, but I suppose that would be a hassle with pirating and stuffs. Meh.

[ The enemies of reason were rightfully stated in the three TV programs that I saw. It is was ridiculous listening to those frightful American bigots. Similarly the book "God is not Great" by Christopher Hitchens made it very clear what a ridiculous religion Islam is in its patch work of stolen credos, its treatment of women and the fundamentalist beliefs. Even the so called gentler religions such as Buddhism have bizarre ideas of the afterlife and belief in a god.

I watched Enemies of Reason, and Dawkins brought up the scare over the MMR vaccine. He said the claims it causes autism were unfounded, and was based on some bogus information spread on the internet. People weren't saying it was the vaccine it's self, but mercury levels from an additive called Thimerosal.

This did not start exactly start on the Internet.

I have been looking forward to this uncut version and am enjoying it as expected but I am very disappointed not to see an uncut version of the Ted Haggard interview. I was so frustrated that in the "cut" version, he kind of gets the last word in....I know that WE know what happened with him but I would love to have seen RD's reactions and if he said anything else or did RD just throw his hands in the air in despair and walk out at that point?
Also, the interview with the militant Jew turned Muslim guy in Israel. I really wanted to hear more of what he said in order to try to understand his view however strange it was. Its the fact that he truly believes it which fascinates me.

I think those two interviews were in 'Root of all evil'.

'Enemies of Reason' deals more with pseudo-science like healing crystals and homeopathy.

Derren has a new blog in which one of his main focuses will be exposing religious extremism, faith belief, cults and manipulative psychology. There's already plenty of posts but it would be nice to get some links from everyone here as it is really open to the Dawkins way of thinking whilst having a really direct link to the "average joe" public (unlike the "preaching to the converted" that can get lost on the web). Help if you can by submitting links.

main blog is here:
http://derrenbrownart.com/blog/

and there's a filter for all the religious stuff too:
http://derrenbrownart.com/blog/?cat=12

you can just submit your links to Coops (DB assistant) or any one of the others who post on there.

Howdy, folks -

Over here on the other side of the pond, a lot of us of limited means - a pool that is increasing daily, unfortunately - would love to have Prof. Dawkins' DVDs available via the Netflix mail rental service. However, I just called Netflix, and they said that both Root of All Evil? and Enemies of Reason et al are not available in the DVD format used in North America. I think the audience for those would increase dramatically if they could also be produced in that format in the future. Thanks much.

Those titles are available in NTSC and region free, so they are suitable for North-America. Send Netflix to the store...

Just talked to Netflix again. (They do have some DVD's available through richarddawkins.net, by the way; eg, the AAI 2007 Convention discs). But the bottom line is, the DVDs they carry have to be:
- officially released in Region 1 (including All Regions); AND,
- available IN THE U.S. And, their simplest definition of that is it's available on Amazon, and can be looked up on IMDB.
They do not order from overseas websites. Ever. (Something I didn't know; about 30% of my DVD viewing via Netflix has been British- in my case, Spooks/MI-5, crime dramas, other BBC, etc. etc.) and I assumed they were ordering them themselves from Britain. They don't).

The God Delusion Debate, Root of All Evil? and the Uncut Interviews, the Pat Condell Anthology, etc. are releasable in North America - but no one carries them here. One reason Amazon lists them as 'unavailable'.

(Actually, the God Delusions Debate does have one single copy available on Amazon; but they wouldn't attempt to get it in that instance. My experience with Netflix is that if they can't buy enough in North America to have at least one copy at each mail distribution center, they won't do it).

So, until more of Prof. Dawkins stuff is not just releasable in North America, but actually on sale inside North America, the millions who use Netflix (and, I suspect the other DVD mail rental services like Blockbuster) are out of luck (until, in my case, my finances improve, anyway!!)..

Cheers,

Netflix only works with distributors, so we have been working with a company called Victory Multimedia who then deals with Netflix... it's kind of a pain, but it helps Netflix sift out stuff they wouldn't want I guess. They assume that if you went through the trouble of a getting a distributor, you're DVD isn't just a home movie that you pressed a few copies of. We've also started releasing some titles through amazon.com, which helps the titles become a little more reputable. Unfortunately, the IWC (Channel 4) titles like Root of All Evil?, The Enemies of Reason and The Genius of Charles Darwin aren't ours to distribute. We just have a deal with IWC that allows us to sell DVDs through RD.net . Titles like The Four Horsemen (and the other discussions DVDs), AAI 07, and Appearances and Events are titles we own completely and can distribute in all possible channels without any red tape.

We're working hard this year to create some new original video programming which we hope will be on par with the edited and produced IWC titles (like ROAE). This will all be done in-house, so we'll have final cut, final say on the title, full distribution and so on. This is one of the top priorities of the foundation, and I'm really excited about what's in the pipe.

I have a report to make on a televised version of Richard Dawkins' "The Enemies of Reason" that I watched a few months ago. It introduced me to the world of Professor Dawkins and I was amazed to find when I purchased his DVD recently through the Dawkins website, that the episode "Slaves to Superstition" seemed on the televised version (broadcast by Australia's Government Broadcaster ABC) to be heavily edited with some scenes shortened and others completly missing.

I realise that Channel 4 in England is a commercial station and must make room for advertisements, but the ABC in Australia is not a commercial network and broadcasts programs without interuption, however it might try to make a more flowing episode with minor adjustments to remove the idea of pauses for adverisements when it shows a program from another commercial station.

Why however were some telling comments completly removed, such as Dawkins claim that more people believe in astrology than any of the Gods of the day. The interview with illusionist Derren Brown concerning how cold reading is applied to fool vulnerable people is nowhere to be found and there are other questionable omissions. I wonder if Professor Dawkins is aware that such 'editing' is taking place with his work?

I was not home on the night his program was broadcast on the ABC, but after seeing it advertised in a TV guide I set it up for program recording. So I have a copy of this 'edited' version and wonder if there is a sensible reason as to why it should so differ from the DVD available from Professor Dawkins' web site?

I do understand that some glitches in my recording are due to interuption to my digital broadcast signal and none of these are influencing my comments.

I enjoyed this, though I had to watch it in short sections and have breaks to quell my annoyance - unlike Root, which I found frankly petrifying, Haggard in particular.

I did have one comment that I wish I could pass on to Prof Dawkins - that this constant claim of enormous numbers who die in hospital due to 'medical negligence' includes a major percentage who die because they don't get preventative treatment, such as heparin to prevent fatal blood clots when bedbound. So the majority die because they didn't get enough medical treatment (60% of in-hospital deaths are due to undiagnosed pulmonary embolus confirmed at autopsy), or late diagnosis of a life-threatening condition, not because they were given drugs or were the victims of other errors of commision that killed them.

The woo brigade love the 'doctors kill patients' line, whereas the truth is that these patients would have died anyway. The proportion who die as a result of active medical treatment is much smaller.

BTW, I'm not saying that we as doctors therefore shouldn't work to reduce these figures.
When I give a life-saving drug, resuscitate a small baby, listen to great music, stand in front of an amazing sculpture, view Hubble photos, or read an incredible book, I think "We did this. We. Us. Humanity. All by ourselves."

Try saying it to yourself.

We did this. We. Us. Humanity.

Yeah! I agree...it does still make me wonder why such a credible person's input should be 'deleted' from a television showing of Professor Dawkin's excellent program "The Enemies of Reason".

Lot's of people have their own influences to contribute...even TV exectutives are not beyond cutting stuff they find unexceptable.

Can somebody who owns the DVD tell me whether the uncut interview with "Steve Fuller" is included? The "and more" on the description page is not very helpful.

I'd like to see the uncut interview with Yousef Al-Khattab. That man was scary...
