What is a troll? How to spot one?

Postby flyingscot » Thu May 31, 2007 2:20 am

What is a troll?

The Oxford English Dictionary has a few definitions.
1. a fabulous being, esp a giant or dwarf dwelling in a cave
2. sing out in a carefree manner
3. fish by drawing bait along in the water
4. esp. Brit. walk, stroll

Keeping these definitions in mind, you have to be on the lookout for a very large or very small cave dweller who likes to sing while fishing and is not adverse to walking to the river from his/her cave.

There are certainly quite a few trolls that frequent this site. Sometimes they are not easy to recognize at first.

How do you spot the trolls?

Ha Ha....so that's what they really look like. I love that poster.
I'll remember that advice and try to ignore them.

its tough because the troll has evolved camouflage that allow them to appear like rational and concerned questioners simply looking for answers to their profoundest queries . . . and then pow they are trying to save your soul by threatening you with an eternity in hell if you don't believe what they believe . . .

there is one troll in particular on this site that has settled in and is constantly being fed and is still weaving incredible circular arguments he calls the armor of god.

beware!

Could that be the 'small jumping parasite'?? I have seen him around and really wonder what he gets out of trolling this site.

I hope this is not breaking the rules by talking about a poster.......

Impromptu, I rely on the techie meme community You're The Man Now Dog!, http://www.ytmnd.com.

History of at Wikipedia Pretty much perpetuates internet memes, or "fads" as they're referred to. The HeadOn gag's pretty popular, as well as the O RLY? owls, Kirk's famous "KAAAAAAAAHN!!!" line, and they're continually ripping Eric Bauman (ebaum's world) a new asshole. Some of them are comedy gold, most are annoying. If they're getting on your nerves lemme know, I'll stop, I promise! :shifty:

^^^It's called spending to much damn time on these forums, after awhile you come across it all.

It was the very first site, taken from "Finding Forrester." Basically it's him pointing and saying "You're the Man Now, Dog!" over and over. Became a phenomenon (meme) and people have been making new ones since. Fascinating, really. ;)

Sure thing, glad someone else besides me gets a kick out of them. ;)

Thought you'd like the Metal Gear One. They do a lot of them:

Bill Cosby

Ferris Bueller

Rocky Balboa

And let's not forget Alvin and the Chipmunks. ;)

It's Weird Al's "Hardware Store" from his Poodle Hat Album. I really don't wanna know what an "automatic circumsiser" is.

Yesh, hackers are interesting folk. I learned a lot about this kinda stuff, phone phreaking, black boxes, etc from a nifty CD-ROM series, The Hacker Chronicles. Also got to see some of the best demoscene work coming out of Finland (Future Crew) and other parts of Europe. Never had the gear or the technical know-how to really get invovled tho, but I hope to at least break into the Remixer scene at some point.

EDIT: I personally like the Zero Wing Rhapsody. ;)
